From parking lot to drive-in movie theater: Bars in Richardson innovate during pandemic

The pop-up drive-in features a film, live entertainment and car-hop service.

A Richardson business has joined a national resurgence in drive-in movie theaters, fueled by people looking for ways to get out of the house and enjoy entertainment amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reid Robinson started the pop-up drive-in theater in April as a way to encourage people to continue visiting his two bars in Richardson, KERA reported. Robinson and his business partners own The Forum and Brizo, located at the Shops at Promenade on North Coit Road.

For the most part, drive-ins have all but disappeared across the nation, with some exceptions. In their heyday, about 4,000 drive-ins were operating in the 1950s. At last count, there were about 330, according to driveinmovie.com. There are also several notable drive-in theaters in other areas of the state and in North Texas.
