Your time and money are valuable, so you should invest them in good movies. Here are some films in theaters this week that have been approved by our in-house critics and/or reviewers from elsewhere on the internet.
If Beale Street Could Talk
Richard Roeper of Chicago Sun-Times writes of the Golden Globe-nominated film: "This movie works as a timeless romance, a family drama, a legal thriller and a poignant social commentary. A great American novel has been turned into a great American film." Our own Chris Vognar calls Beale Street "a lush, lyrical movie" in his feature about director Barry Jenkins (the Oscar-winning Moonlight).
Vice
Bob Mondelo of NPR writes that Christian "Bale makes the title character a lot like his Batman - basically a psychopath-turned-vigilante."
On the Basis of Sex
Brian Lowry of CNN.com writes what more than a few people are thinking: "Worth seeing, not only as a tribute to the jurist nicknamed 'Notorious RBG' but for the welcome context that it provides... As a drama, though, the film is just a bit too thin to warrant much more than ending up on the favorable side of a split decision."
The Vanishing
Roger Moore of Movie Nation writes: "Gritty, primal and wonderfully-acted Scottish mystery thriller that lets Gerard Butler dazzle in ensemble work."
Bathtubs Over Broadway
Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune makes a point: "Another reminder that top-drawer musical-theater talent has long been more abundant in America than prestigious paying gigs, and that great actors can make you cry when they're singing about car-key blanks."
