Don Henley jotted down the lyrics to ‘Desperado’ in April. They sold for $33,000 this week

The founding Eagle teamed up with Heritage Auctions to raise money for the North Texas Food Bank through the sale.

Some people still sound surprised when they hear that the Eagles hold the title for the No. 1-selling album in music history. But hey, nonbelievers, it’s true. Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) maintains a claw hold on the top spot, 44 years after its 1976 release. And just one of the reasons is its sweetly elegant ballad, “Desperado,” co-written by the band’s founders, the late Glenn Frey and Dallas’ own Don Henley. Rolling Stone once named “Desperado” one of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

So it’s no surprise that a set of lyrics to the song that Henley handwrote specifically for this event fetched $33,600 at a Heritage Auctions event that raised $100,000 for the North Texas Food Bank on Wednesday night, May 13. A guitar donated by Henley and signed by the Eagles’ current lineup proved to be the second most prized item, selling for $12,600.

"This effort will provide 300,000 meals for hungry North Texans during a critical time,” said Trisha Cunningham, president and CEO of the North Texas Food Bank.

People still love the Eagles, and you bet they also love ’em some classic Dallas Cowboys. A diagram of the legendary "Hail Mary” play painted by Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer Roger Staubach and signed by Staubach and Drew Pearson sold as well, for $7,500.
