Four days after Travis Scott’s performance at Astroworld in Houston turned deadly, one of the bands that had been set to perform at the festival is heading to Dallas.
Tame Impala’s concert at American Airlines Center on Tuesday night will be its second since the Astroworld Festival was canceled. The band was on the bill for the second day of the Houston festival, alongside others like 21 Savage, Bad Bunny and Earth Wind and Fire. But the remainder of the two-day event from entertainment giant Live Nation was scrapped after at least eight people died and dozens were hurt on Friday night during Scott’s performance. Among them was a 27-year-old North Texas man, Danish Baig, who was killed. A nine-year-old boy, Ezra Blount, was also severely injured, according to reports.
For Tame Impala, Astroworld came amid a southwestern leg of its “Slow Rush” tour. The Australian psychedelic group kicked off the tour in September after months of pandemic issues that paralyzed the live entertainment industry. Fans have been waiting for it since February 2020, when the band released its fourth studio album.
On Monday, as an investigation continued at Houston’s NRG Park into what appeared to be one of the deadliest crowd-control incidents at a U.S. concert in years, Tame Impala played a show at another Houston venue — and offered condolences.
“I’m not going to go on for long about it, but I know there’s a weird feeling in Houston right now,” frontman Kevin Parker told a sold-out crowd at White Oak Music Hall, according to the Houston Press, “and my heart breaks for what happened at Astroworld a few days ago. But I know that you guys will take care of each other and we’ll take care of you and we’ll all take care of each other. And we’ll still have a really [expletive] good time.”
The set lasted nearly two hours, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Tame Impala’s Dallas concert is the band’s next stop after leaving Houston and the largest show it’s played since the weekend. (Houston’s White Oak Music Hall holds only about 3,000 on its lawn.)
It’s also its last U.S. concert for the time being. On Saturday, the band is due in Monterrey, Mexico for a run of shows beginning with the annual Pa’l Norte music and art festival.
