The Silver Skylarks fuse ’60s soul, ’70s funk and ’90s hip-hop into one cohesive groove

The Dallas band is led by veteran radio hosts/musicians Danny Balis and producer Jeff “Skin” Wade.

How to make old styles sound fresh? Dallas’ Silver Skylarks give a master class on the topic on The Number One Set and Sound, a debut album fusing ‘60s soul, ‘70s funk and ‘90s hip-hop into one cohesive groove.

The Skylarks are led by veteran local radio hosts/musicians Danny Balis (Sorta, Bastards of Soul) and producer Jeff “Skin” Wade, who’s been exploring funk since way back when he was still “Skinny Fresh” with the Hydroponic Sound System. The album — on the local soul-minded Eastwood Records — features cameos by the Black Pumas’ Adrian Quesada and rappers the D.O.C. and Large Professor.

Wade’s been busy lately with his gig as a Dallas Mavericks broadcaster, but you can see him and Balis on June 16 in the Bishop Arts District when the Skylarks host an album-listening party and Q&A session with guest DJ Luke Sardello.
