Dallas Theater Center’s canceled production of American Mariachi will be available online to subscribers, patrons who already bought tickets, or anyone who would like to see it and is willing to buy a virtual seat before they run out, DTC announced today.
In an unusual arrangement with the Actors’ Equity Association that represents stage performers, the Theater Center can sell the number of tickets that would’ve been available had the show gone on, but only until the original closing date of April 5, said Tray LaCaze, director of marketing and communications.
That’s about 7,000 seats, according to LaCaze, which go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at my.dallastheatercenter.org/american-mariachi/54292. The pay-what-you-can price ranges from $15-$100. The ticket entitles the buyer to a one-time viewing over the two weeks following their purchase.
Subscribers and current ticket holders will begin receiving a link tonight to the filmed version of the musical play about a young woman who decides to form an all-girl mariachi band while caring for her ailing mother. It’s set in the 1970s, and she faces all sorts of obstacles.
As it does routinely with all of its productions, DTC shot the March 13 dress rehearsal with four cameras. Written by José Cruz González, the comedy is slated to move to the Goodman Theatre in Chicago for a run from April 25 to May 31.
