Editor’s note: Lisa Salinas interned with The Dallas Morning News on the Arts & Entertainment desk this summer. Her coverage included highlighting Black artists who created artwork in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police; a profile of Fort Worth native and director Channing Godfrey Peoples who debuted her first feature film, Miss Juneteenth, this summer; a profile of award-winning artist Virginia Grise who joined Cara Mía Theatre as a playwright in residence; and more. Here, Salinas shares three podcasts she’s listening to and loving.
The Michelle Obama Podcast
Launched just a few weeks ago, this show is bringing me much needed inspiration and hope amid these uncertain times. In her first episode, former first lady Michelle Obama sits down with her husband and former President Barack Obama. What stood out to me the most in this conversation was the message that there is power and promise in caring about others as we all navigate through life. During a time where we are all divided by physical distance and having very real conversations around racial tensions and politics, this was a great reminder that we’re all better when we try to work together.

Latino USA
As a Latina myself, I was thrilled when I first discovered this podcast about two years ago. Produced by the Futuro Media Group, which was founded by award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa (who also anchors the show) Latino USA’s stories and interviews center around the Latino community. Whether it’s a conversation with politicians such as U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, presidential candidates, musical artists including the likes of Rosalía and Ángela Aguilar, or revisiting the folks who were affected by the immigration raids in Mississippi last year, the team here shares stories that represent the richness and courage of the Latino community.

It’s Been A Minute with Sam Sanders
Listening to and reading the news doesn’t always leave us with a warm feeling inside –– especially these days. But Sam Sanders’ weekly news wrap-ups do. In addition to bringing us culture-based interviews and news, Sanders chats with fellow journalists about the latest happenings every week. At the end of the show we hear from listeners about the best part of their week, which ranges from celebrating birthdays and graduations to everyday happenings. Hearing folks from around the country share their happy moments is the best part of my week.
