There’s a new podcast out about Selena. Here’s why you should listen

‘Anything for Selena’ unpacks the late star’s legacy with a host who gets it.

“Selena changed my life ... her legacy helped me articulate my own Latinidad,” says Maria Garcia, host of the new podcast Anything for Selena, which is more than just a retelling of the late star’s story.

Weekly episodes released in Spanish and English examine the marks Selena Quintanilla left on everything from body politics to biculturalism to, of course, Tejano music. Interviews, which include one with Selena’s father, help listeners unpack her legacy.

But perhaps most meaningful is how the host, a journalist at Boston’s NPR affiliate, WBUR, weaves her own journey as a Mexican-American into the show. “Those of us in the middle who felt like we weren’t enough, enough to be fully Mexican or fully American... Selena was enough in both places, and that meant that maybe I could be enough,” Garcia says in the first of 10 episodes.
