Parks and trails in DeSoto where you can celebrate Earth Day

With Earth Day on April 22, many DeSoto residents will be looking for places to enjoy the outdoors.

Here’s a list of parks and trails in the city. And here’s more information on 22 hiking and biking spots in other parts of North Texas.

Moseley Park

Moseley Park is a community park at 1300 Honor Drive with a girls’ softball complex, a family aquatic center, a playground and basketball and sand volleyball courts.

Briarwood Park

This 12-acre neighborhood park is located at 1625 West Belt Line Road. The park includes two playgrounds as well as a less than one mile multipurpose trail, picnic tables and a gazebo.

Ernie Roberts Park

DeSoto’s first disability-friendly park opened to the public earlier this year. It is located at 515 E. Pleasant Run Road.

The park features new swings, zip lining, musical instruments, a merry-go-round and different inclusive elements, such as ramps, puzzles, and soft surfaces that make it easier for children with mobility devices to navigate.

Kiva Park

This park at 1155 Beaverbrook Lane is in an abandoned rock quarry and can be accessed from the Kiva Trail, which runs through the surrounding neighborhood. According to the park’s description on DeSoto’s website, the amenities of the 13-acre park includes a playground with shade covering, picnic tables and a gazebo.

DeSoto Ranch Nature Trail

This 1.2-mile trail with a wildflower area and two ponds is located at 1022 Woodridge Drive near the Wildwood and Oakmont neighborhoods and the DeSoto Ranch subdivision.

Roy Orr Trail

The 3.6-mile, 8-foot-wide concrete trail travels along Ten Mile Creek through the center of the city and connects neighborhoods to access points at the Town Center, Murphy Hills Park and Ernie Roberts Park.

Windmill Hill Nature Preserve

The preserve, located at the southeast corner of Duncanville and Wintergreen roads, encompasses 75 acres. The hiking trail has some steep hills, which can be a challenge for some. The bridge that crosses Ten Mile Creek is named in memory of the late legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, a Dallas native.

Grimes Park and the DeSoto BMX track

Grimes Park at 501 E. Wintergreen Road has baseball and soccer complexes and is also the home of DeSoto BMX, the country’s first covered facility built exclusively for BMX racing. The 60,000-square-foot track is lighted and hosts racing competitions.
