Budget airline Frontier Airlines adds flights from DFW Airport to Boston

The Denver-based budget airline’s new direct route will run four times per week starting in August.

The NBA Finals between the Mavericks and Celtics mean Dallas and Boston aren’t exactly friendly cities right now, but that hasn’t stopped Frontier Airlines from extending an olive branch.

On Thursday, the low-cost carrier unveiled a new commercial route between DFW International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport beginning in August as a way to expand its footprint across the country. The new flights will run between DFW Airport and Boston four times per week, with promotional rates starting at $59 one-way.

“By providing exceptional value and a superior travel experience, ‘The New Frontier’ is leading the way in the airline industry when it comes to convenience and affordability,” said Josh Flyr, vice president of network and operations at Frontier Airlines, in a release.

Before, flights between Dallas and Boston on Frontier always required at least one layover and could regularly take more than 10 hours. Now passengers will be able to make the nonstop trek in under four.

Other airlines have flown to Boston for years out of DFW Airport. More than 1.3 million passengers have traveled between the two cities since June 2023, according to airline data company Cirium.

Over the past year, Fort Worth-based American Airlines sent an average of 386 flights per month between the cities. Delta and JetBlue, which each have a hub at Boston Logan, operate more than 220 combined trips between Boston and DFW each month, while Frontier’s low-cost competitor Spirit Airlines sends more than 50.

DFW is one of Frontier’s busiest airport hubs and the carrier has rapidly grown its volume of flights across 2024. The airline has scheduled more than 2,000 trips each month from May to August, shuttling 400,000-plus passengers to 46 domestic and international destinations. In August alone, Frontier has 1,083 outbound routes planned for more than 200,000 customers.

Frontier has been eying growth at DFW Airport for several months. In January, the airline added 13 new nonstop domestic destinations and one new international destination out of DFW beginning in spring 2024.
