This summer, the State Department launched an online passport renewal service. There are certain restrictions for who can take advantage of this option, and processing times are about six to eight weeks.

Expedited passports are an option, though companies that offer the service can charge hefty fees. G3 Global Services, a private company, charges anywhere from $150 to $770 in service fees for expedited visas and passports, depending on how quickly the traveler needs the identification document.

As pent-up demand for international travel built back up, many were pushing to find a way to get a passport, whether that be waiting in long lines or even calling local representatives to try to get an appointment.
