A peek at what summer will look like for American Airlines, D-FW next year

The Fort Worth-based airline is debuting five new routes to Europe this summer.

American Airlines is adding more international flights for Dallas-Fort Worth passengers beginning next year.

Among other major additions to the Fort Worth-based airline’s network like five new routes to Europe for the summer, a daily flight to Barcelona will begin on American on March 30. The airline is also expanding capacity for three daily routes to Asia: Tokyo Haneda, Tokyo Narita and Shanghai.

The 2025 summer schedule comes after a busy 2024 summer schedule for American, flying 72 million passengers across almost 700,000 flights. American, like other major air carriers, is also facing delivery delays for its 787 Dreamliners, which are flying the Tokyo Haneda and Shanghai routes out of DFW. The Tokyo Narita route will operate on a Boeing 777-200, which are currently being reconfigured to build a bigger business-class cabin.

In 2019, American announced the Tokyo Haneda route to launch in 2020. After less than three months in service, it was suspended along with most routes to Asia during the COVID-19 pandemic. The DFW to Tokyo route was brought back later in 2023, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. Flights from DFW to Tokyo Narita and Shanghai have been flying for years.

American is also adding a number of new flights, including the addition of nonstop flights from Philadelphia to Edinburgh, Scotland, for the first time since 2019. And it’s adding new routes from Philadelphia to Milan, from Charlotte to Athens, from Miami to Rome and from Chicago to Madrid.

Last week, a ceremonial wall-breaking for renovations to DFW Airport’s Terminal C was held, one of American’s largest terminals at the airport. American accounts for over 80% of commercial traffic at DFW, according to Jim Moses, senior vice president of DFW operations at American.

“We connect customers all over the world with one convenience stop at DFW, and it’s our honor to continue strengthening our global network here at DFW, providing more options for our customers in North Texas and those who connect here from around the world,” Moses told attendees.
