Developers in Mesquite have broken ground on a mixed-use project that will join the city's landmark rodeo arena.
Developer Centurion American Development Group is building the 54-acre Iron Horse Village project near Military Parkway and LBJ Freeway.
The development, which has been in the works since last year, adjoins the Mesquite Championship Rodeo arena, which Centurion American is also renovating.
Plans for Iron Horse Village call for 336 single-family homes, 130,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and entertainment space, and 4.5 acres of open space. The project will include townhomes, residential bungalows, villas and urban row houses.
The first two phases of the project will open in late 2020.
"Today is a historic moment for Mesquite. We are breaking ground on the largest mixed-use project in the history of the community," Mesquite Mayor Stan Pickett said in a statement. "Today's event is evidence that we are continuing with that ambition of Mesquite remaining relevant with developers and investors."
Mesquite recently announced that Centurion American is spending more than $2 million to redo the rodeo arena, which is home to the Mesquite Championship Rodeo and a new soccer team, the Mesquite Outlaws. The current building dates to 1985, but the rodeo goes back to the 1940s.
Construction on the arena is scheduled to be wrapped up by the end of the year.
Centurion American is a Farmers Branch-based developer that is best known for restoring downtown Dallas’ historic Statler Hotel.
