Allen approves mixed-use project for State Highway 121, but without cricket stadium

Called The Avenue, it’ll instead be a live-work-play development.

The Allen City Council has approved a planned mixed-use development on State Highway 121.

But the project won’t have the sports stadium that was originally proposed.

Previously known as Allen Sports Village, the 80-acre project will have office space, hotels, single-family homes, and retail, restaurant and entertainment space.

Called The Avenue, the development will be built around an outdoor plaza, a food hall, a row of shops and restaurants in old shipping containers and water features.

“When we made the decision to remove the multi-use stadium from our plans, we saw an opportunity to take a fresh look at creating a unique live-work-play community,” Poorvesh Thakkar, CEO of Thakkar Developers, said in a statement. “Through extensive collaboration with the city of Allen and our neighbors, we designed a project that will bring value to the entire Allen community.”

Thakkar originally proposed building a $500 million sports complex with a cricket stadium. But the deal was canceled after neighborhood opposition to the plan and the departure of a key player in the proposed project.

The just-approved development now includes 1 million square feet of office space, 65 single-family homes, 1,600 urban residential units, three hotels and 275,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, and entertainment development at the southwest corner of State Highway 121 and Alma Road.
