Dallas-based shared-office provider Common Desk is giving more details about its new location on the way in Deep Ellum.
The shared-office company will have a large operation in the more than century-old Continental Gin Building, being renovated on the eastern edge of Deep Ellum.
The more than 20,000-square-foot co-working operation is in the same area of the city where Common Desk got its start eight years ago.
Developer and building owner August Real Estate Co. is teaming up with Common Desk for the project, which will include a coffee shop.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Common Desk on the restoration of the Continental Gin Building,” Evan August, principal at August Real Estate Co., said in a statement. “Considering their Deep Ellum roots and growing success throughout D-FW and the broader Southeast, they were the right choice to help us restore one of Deep Ellum’s most historic landmarks, and this project will enable them to showcase every facet of their expertise.”
Built in 1888 as a manufacturing plant for cotton gins, the Continental Gin Building will open early next year as a creative office, co-working and retail center.
The Continental Gin Building will have more than 17,000 square feet of office and retail space on the first floor, including space for Fiction Coffee, Common Desk’s dedicated coffee outlet.
Common Desk’s co-working center will take up 22,000 square feet of space — the entire second floor — and will include shared-office space, private offices and flexible team suites. There also will be lounge areas, phone booths and conference rooms.
The third floor of the Continental Gin Building will house another 22,000 square feet of flexible and fully furnished speculative office suites.
“We’re incredibly excited to play a bigger role in the Deep Ellum neighborhood as an industry innovator and advocate for the office offering of the future,” Common Desk founder Nick Clark said in a statement. “Unlike the new ground-up office projects in Deep Ellum, the Continental Gin Building has a rich history in the neighborhood.”
August Real Estate also just purchased another nearby Deep Ellum property, the former Trunk Club building at 333 First Ave. on the edge of Deep Ellum near Fair Park. The three-story historic building will be converted to office space.
Common Desk’s Deep Ellum expansion comes as the company is growing with a third location in Houston.
The co-working firm will open a more than 24,000-square-foot office in Houston’s Westchase district.
