A nearly $28M Highland Park estate with Mediterranean flair was Texas’ priciest home

Venetian plaster walls, a wine grotto and 10-car garage are among its fanciest features.

A nearly $28 million mansion in Highland Park with a Mediterranean flair was the most expensive home listed statewide last month.

Six of Texas’ 10 priciest listings were in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to a May list from the Houston Association of Realtors. The association uses information from local listing services throughout the state, including North Texas Real Estate Information Systems.

The data was compiled before the end of the month, so some homes listed in late May may be included in June’s rankings. Some homes listed in late April may have made the May list.

The Highland Park estate that topped last month’s list is located at 3509 Euclid Ave. and is more than 16,000 square feet. It has six bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and four partial baths. The home sits on a .96-acre lot.

The mansion’s more luxurious features include its Venetian plaster walls, wine grotto, home theater and a spacious 10-car garage. The grotto is temperature-controlled and has room to store roughly 1,000 bottles. A dining space just outside the storage area can fit a 12-person table with ease, listing agent Jonathan Rosen told The Dallas Morning News.

A series of bifolding doors off the kitchen opens to an outdoor patio. This area is temperature-controlled and can serve as a third living space on the main floor.

The primary suite has its own bifold doors that lead to another patio. A set of screens gives you an enclosed indoor-outdoor space close to the bedroom. The gym is right off the primary suite, and it includes a dry sauna and massage room, said Rosen, the principal of The Rosen Group at Compass.

“This owner did a really big remodel ... and brought it a little more up to date,” he said. “It’s got a great California vibe to it.”

Dallas Central Appraisal District records show the home is owned by a trust affiliated with the Herd family, known for their oil interests. D Magazine reported in August 2023 that Alex Davis, a billionaire and CEO of Austin-based investment firm Disputive Acquisition Corporation, moved into the Highland Park estate.

The home was previously owned by Wade Barker, a Mesquite surgeon who pleaded guilty to his role in an alleged $200 million health care fraud in 2018.
