Target will add new Apple shops to some of its stores

Target stores in Allen, Hurst, Irving, Austin and San Antonio will be the first in Texas to get the shops. See the full list.

Target is adding Apple shops inside 17 of its stores this month, including five in Texas. More are planned for later this year and before holiday shopping begins.

While building its own brands, Target has been forming relationships with legacy brands such as Disney and Levi Strauss & Co. and new exclusive brands such as Hearth & Hand with Magnolia from Joanna Gaines. Target carves out dedicated spaces in its stores to feature the brands, similar to the way department stores have treated national brands for a long time. Target is also expanding its already large beauty sections with Ulta Beauty.

Target already sells Apple products in its electronics departments, and the new space will double the floor space the Apple brand occupies.

Apple and Target already have a big customer overlap, and Target is expecting the shops to make its stores stronger destinations for electronics shoppers.

“This new model was created with Target’s guests in mind, and we’ll continue to learn and enhance the experience through future rollouts later this year,” said Christina Hennington, chief growth officer for Target.

The shop will not have a “genius bar,” the personalized service that helped make Apple stores a success and attracted attention to the brand’s first store 20 years ago. But Target said its staff will be able to demonstrate Apple Watches and help customers “try out the products and get one-on-one assistance.”

Target employees will receive training from Apple, the company said.

Apple products also have a new landing page on Target.com and in the Target app.

Target, Walmart, Amazon and supermarket chains Kroger and Albertsons are among the big retailers that have benefited financially during the pandemic, gaining market share as Americans limited their trips to stores.

Comparisons may be difficult in 2021. Retail analysts are closely watching how consumers will stick with new habits. As more people are vaccinated, the expectation is that people will return to some of their regular shopping patterns — even trips to the mall — and be back in restaurants and bars. Food, beverage and liquor sales, which have propped up retail sales in recent months, may drop back to pre-pandemic levels.

Apple permanently closed a couple of local mall stores in 2019 at the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano and Stonebriar Centre in Frisco and opened a new store at Galleria Dallas. It also has stores in Southlake and Fort Worth. All of its local stores have closed temporarily a few times during the pandemic and are closed now.

Collin County doesn’t have an Apple Store, so the Apple shop at the Allen Target may be popular.
