REI will set up camp in Prosper as city attracts more interest from retailers

The Washington state outdoor gear chain will add its fifth site in D-FW.

REI — one of the most popular retailers for outdoor gear — is set to join Prosper, adding another big name to the city’s growing lineup of stores.

The Seattle-area based chain plans to open in early 2026 at The Gates of Prosper near Preston Road and University Drive, according to a statement Friday. Already, REI has four locations in Dallas-Fort Worth and about nearly dozen statewide.

REI is planning to open stores across the country in the next few years as it draws customers looking for outdoor-ready boots and jackets or camping gear like stainless-steel mess kits and personal locator beacons. It’s a consumer co-op with a community of 24 million members though everyone is welcome to shop at the retailer.

The planned store follows the announcement earlier this month of a Nordstrom Rack set to join The Gates of Prosper. It’s been adding retailers and restaurants that range from Burlington and Dick’s Sporting Goods to Kung Fu Tea and Rally House. The development is owned and managed by Blue Star Land — which is owned by the Gene and Jerry Jones family of the Dallas Cowboys franchise.

Existing REI stores in North Texas include Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano and Southlake. Other planned stores in the U.S. are in states such as Utah and Colorado.

“Cities that will have new stores represent communities that serve as a gateway to some of the country’s most incredible natural places and where our members currently live or destinations where they love to play outside,” Mary-Farrell Tarbox, REI vice president of stores, said in a statement.
