A grocer that’s ramping up in the Dallas region has snatched up land in Mesquite.
“H-E-B purchased 25.6 acres in Mesquite this week in anticipation of future growth in North Texas,” the company said, noting that the property is south of Interstate 20 near FM 741.
That is an area of Kaufman County between Forney and Crandall known as Heartland.
While H-E-B has been investing in new stores in the area, it’s not clear how its land holdings might be put to use in the future. Its current locales include Frisco, McKinney and Plano.
The grocer has plans for other sites, and Mesquite is near one of those with an investment in Forney. Earlier this month, the San Antonio-based grocer said it is set to begin work in October there with the opening expected for early 2026. The store, which has been in the works for a while, will be at U.S. Highway 80 and Gateway Boulevard.
Earlier this week, the City Council approved a restaurant and retail development with what’s anticipated to be a grocer that’s south of I-20 and west of FM 741.
Mesquite, which boasts about 147,000 residents, is home to retail sites such as Town East Mall, which is home to many stores such as H&M and Dillard’s. The city’s grocery stores include Albertsons, Aldi and Sprouts Farmers Market.
Industries that thrive in the city include manufacturing, high tech, and distribution and logistics.
