If you want a locally pastured turkey for Thanksgiving, put it on your radar now. Already the ones that Thomas Locke is raising at Bois d’Arc Meat Co. ― fewer than in years past ― are spoken for. And only a handful of other growers are doing birds this year.
Rehoboth Ranch near Greenville, which delivers to various drop points around North Texas, already has a place on its website to reserve your holiday bird with a $30 deposit: Go to “pasture raised turkey” under the shopping tab and click on one of the Thanksgiving choices, depending on what size bird you’d like. Turkeys cost $6.49 per pound and are delivered frozen.
This year, the Hutchins family, who started Rehoboth, will experiment with smoking some of the birds, “since we get a lot of requests for that,” says Hillary Hutchins. Stay tuned to Rehoboth’s website or Facebook page to see how this develops. rehobothranch.com.
Burgundy Pasture Beef will be offering fresh (chilled) as well as frozen birds raised at Prairie Oasis Farm in Millsap. “I like folks to know where we get them,” says co-owner Wendy Taggart. The frozen birds will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Fort Worth and Dallas Burgundy’s Local storefronts. To find out when the birds will be ready for purchase, get on the Burgundy Beef email list on the website under the tab for the store nearest you.
A limited number of fresh, chilled turkeys will be ready for Burgundy Pasture Beef the week of Thanksgiving. Starting early to mid-September, the local stores as well as the Grandview store will take reservations for the fresh birds with a $25 deposit. burgundypasturebeef.com.
Meanwhile, you can also purchase a Prairie Oasis turkey directly from the farm. Go to the website to reserve your bird with a $30 deposit. This will prompt you to provide contact information so you’ll know what to do next. Owner Kim Boone says the turkeys range from 13 to 18 pounds and run between $80 and $120. Millsap is about 45 miles west of Fort Worth. prairieoasisfarm.com.
