Editor’s Note: This story first published on March 6, 2023.

The fish sandwich has never experienced the celebrity of the fried chicken sandwich, but for a 40-day stretch every year, it gets the spotlight. The Lenten season is the time of year when fast-food chains bring back filleted fish for a limited run, but there are great, available-year-round fish sandwiches sitting in plain sight on local menus across Dallas-Fort Worth. Here are 10 of them to try during Lent — or anytime.

Beer-battered cod sandwich at Loro

Loro’s beer-battered cod makes for a next-level fish sandwich. The crisp batter around the fish is spiked with yellow curry and turmeric, the cabbage slaw is flavored with caraway, and the Thousand Island sauce has a yuzu tang. Sit on Loro’s patio on a sunny day with one of these in front of you, and you’ll think you’re on vacation.

Sardine or tuna sandwich at La Bodega Rotisserie + Goods

The sardine sandwich includes roasted tomatoes, olives, capers, fresh herbs, olive oil and vinegar. The little counter-order restaurant also makes a tuna sandwich with tuna conserva, capers, pickled vegetables, apple, dill, arugula, Dijon, olive oil and vinegar.
