Berkley’s Market to take over former Foxtrot spot

When one neighborhood market closes, another one opens.

The McKinney Avenue storefront that previously housed Foxtrot, a Chicago-based neighborhood coffee shop and market, will soon be home to an almost identical Dallas-based concept.

Berkley’s Market, which recently announced the closure of two of its four Dallas locations, will open in the space Foxtrot formerly operated in before it and the three other Dallas Foxtrot locations abruptly closed in April.

“We’re bringing back a local, neighborhood grocer to McKinney Avenue, in one of the most dynamic areas in Dallas,” said Berkley’s Market founder Zac Porter in a prepared statement. “And this location is perfect for us — it’s on the main thoroughfare, halfway between our other two stores, making it an ideal hub for our operations.”

The downtown Dallas and Oak Cliff locations of Berkley’s Market were closed to consolidate operations at the “more central McKinney Avenue location” and position the brand to reach more people, according to a news release.

Like Foxtrot, Berkley’s Market is part coffee shop and part upscale market with prepared foods, pantry goods, beer and wine. The new Uptown location will also function as the test kitchen for the market and its two other locations, one in Knox Henderson and the other in the Arts District.

“We’re leaning further into our prepared foods program here, while still offering our core favorites,” Porter said.

Along with food made in-house, the market serves locally made goods like pastries from La Casita Bakeshop and bagels from Shug’s Bagels.

The Berkley’s Market locations were initially opened as Royal Blue Grocer, an Austin-based neighborhood market chain, but Porter and his co-owners parted ways with the company and rebranded the markets in 2021.

More Berkley’s Market locations are planned, but how many will open and where they’ll be have yet to be announced.
