8 North Texas tacos make Texas Monthly’s list of top 50 in the state

Two of them are in the top 10.

Texas Monthly’s taco editor, José Ralat, traversed 14,000 miles around the state this year to find the best tacos in Texas — 50 of them, to be exact.

Out of more than 1,200 tacos, he found eight of Texas’ best in North Texas. Two of those tacos made the list of the top 10.

Deep Ellum’s Revolver Taco Lounge, led by chef Regino Rojas, came in fourth with its pulpo al pastor taco made with marinated octopus cooked on a vertical rotisserie. Oak Cliff’s Maskaras Mexican Grill ranked ninth with its salsa-drenched tacos ahogados.

Three of the other eight North Texas tacos on the list are also found in Dallas. The other three — Don Artemio in Fort Worth, Vaqueros Texas Bar-B-Q in Grapevine and Zavala’s Barbecue in Grand Prairie — reflect the breadth of the region’s culinary scene.

“To all those who like to talk trash about Dallas and North Texas, come on up. Let’s break tortillas together,” said Ralat, who lives in Oak Cliff.

“There has never been a better time for tacos and the people who love them and make them,” Ralat added. “We’re at the dawn for tacos and Mexican food, and I’m honored to share the stories with Texans and the world.”
