SMU grad launches West Texas beverage company and new ranch water hard seltzer

“It’s a no-frills, get-the-job done kind of drink,” says Katie Beal Brown of Lone River Beverage Company.

Move over White Claw, there’s another spiked seltzer in town: Ranch Water Hard Seltzer from Lone River Beverage Company. The original ranch water for which it’s named is a spritzy, no-fuss cocktail of tequila, lime and Topo Chico, born in West Texas about 50 years ago. Lone River pays homage to that drink with a nicely carbonated hard seltzer made with real lime juice and a wee bit of agave syrup.

Crisp and refreshing, Lone River Ranch Water’s clean, natural flavor distinguishes it from the tutti-frutti spiked seltzers that have been flooding the market. It’s not the only “ranch water” namesake sold in cans ― Shotgun Selzter makes one ― but it is the only low-alcohol version. With just 4% alcohol by volume (compared with Shotgun’s 6.9%), it’s super easy-drinking and wonderfully bubbly. The gluten-free beverage weighs in at just 85 calories, too. An enjoyable porch-pounder or poolside sip, it’s especially refreshing in hot weather.

Lone River Ranch Water is the brainchild of Katie Beal Brown, a fourth generation West Texan who graduated from SMU in 2008. While living in New York, she grew homesick for all things Texan, including ranch water. Now back in West Texas, floating between Midland and Fort Davis, she has teamed up with her family in producing this hard seltzer, releasing it in the midst of a pandemic.

“We believe that now, more than ever, our outdoor spaces and parks are going to play an important role in people’s lives,” Brown says. She sees Ranch Water Hard Seltzer as the perfect beverage for toting to the lake and other outdoor venues.

Brown says the drink is an homage to her fellow West Texans. “When I think of people from West Texas, I think of no-frills, get-the-job-done kind of people … that’s also what Lone River Ranch Water represents ― it’s a no-frills, get-the-job done kind of drink,” she says.

Lone River’s Ranch Water Hard Seltzer is sold in six-packs of 12-ounce cans for about $8.99 at Central Market, Total Wine, Specs and Foxtrot Market and Café. For a full list of retailers, visit loneriverbevco.com.
