Humans have been drinking coffee for centuries, but it was only recently that producers decided coffee should be celebrated with a day.
The U.S.-based National Coffee Association started celebrating National Coffee Day as early as 2013 on Sept. 29, and plenty of coffee producers and shops have latched onto that date as the day to celebrate, with many offering promotions or others specials.
It’s easy enough to confuse National Coffee Day with International Coffee Day, which was born out of the Milan Expo in 2015. It takes place Oct. 1.
Whether you feel led to celebrate on just one of the days or you need at least a few cups a day and will celebrate each, here are some shops in McKinney serving espresso, drip coffee, lattes and other delights.
Filtered
Located in the heart of downtown McKinney, Filtered has options for the coffee purist (pour overs, cold brews and the like) or those who would rather have some milk or syrups mixed in as well (the El Chapo latte with sopapilla flavoring or the Chupacabra with cold brew, almond milk, chocolate syrup and almond syrup.) 218 E Louisiana St. getmefiltered.com
Wattage Coffee Company
Wattage advertises itself as a European style coffee shop, but their beans are roasted in North Texas by Avoca. In addition to traditional coffee drinks, there’s a ‘recovery drink’ on the menu, perfect after a long ride on the bike you bought at Cadence, with which Wattage shares a building and ownership. 129 S Tennessee St. www.wattagecoffee.com
Honeylu’s Coffee
After starting in Prosper, Honeylu’s and its dachshund-heavy branding sniffed a path down to McKinney and serves a variety of coffee and other drinks. Also keep an eye out for their mobile truck that pulls up at events. 7910 Collin McKinney Parkway www.honeylus.com
LAYERED coffee and kitchen
The breakfast or bakery items may steal the show, but LAYERED also serves up a top cup of joe. The beans are roasted in-house, but they’re not afraid to get creative either with spice infusions often popping up on the menu. 111 E Virginia St. www.layeredtx.com/
McKinney Coffee Company
The house blend is the starting point for most of McKinney Coffee Company’s drinks, though it also can be enjoyed on its own. With fall weather arriving, they also have pumpkin spice and peanut butter lattes currently on offer. 1910 N Stonebridge Drive mckinneycoffeeco.com
Duino Coffee
Named after a small town on Italy’s Adriatic coast, Duino looks to foster the same neighborly values found in that community. The drinks live up to the atmosphere, with a robust seasonal menu complementing hot and iced traditional favorites. 7650 Stacy Road Ste. 200 duinocoffee.com
