Boozy booch: Local breweries branching out into hard kombucha tea drinks

Celebrate National Booch Day this weekend at Four Corners Brewing.

There’s a national day of celebration for just about everything these days. And because there’s bad news introduced all too regularly, who couldn’t use a new reason to celebrate an otherwise normal, trying day?

Saturday, Jan. 15 is National Booch Day (or National Kombucha Day, if you must be so formal), and there are plenty of places around Dallas to get your fill of the effervescent fermented tea. It’s been around for thousands of years now, and some say it offers its fans an array of health benefits thanks to its containing rich probiotics and antioxidants.

Craft beer lovers have been able to fill their growlers with traditional kombucha for years now. As a fermented beverage, it fits in nicely with the draft beer selection at popular spots such as Bluffview Growler and Civil Pour in Dallas, as well as the Thirsty Growler in The Colony. Popular kombucha brand Holy Kombucha is based in Dallas too, and its flavors can be found in grocery stores throughout the United States.

Typically, standard kombucha is extremely low in alcohol, with an ABV of less than .05 percent. But local breweries are branching out into hard kombucha. Bishop Cider Co. launched Mama Bear Hard Kombucha in 2020, with a 4% ABV and flavors like mango lime cayenne and lavender lemonade.

In 2021, Four Corners Brewing launched Buchalada Boozy Kombucha Seltzer. The hard kombucha is 4.5% ABV, 120 calories, and available in prickly pear ginger and grapefruit sea salt. The brewery will be celebrating National Booch Day on Jan. 15 by offering a $3 special on the Buchaladas all day at the taproom at 1311 Ervay Street.
