Where to find chef-made turkey stock, deep-fried Cajun turkeys and lots of pie

Local food artisans are good go-tos for holiday meals.

There’s lots going on in local artisan food circles in the coming weeks, whether you’re scouting for tip-top, chef-made organic turkey stock or deep-fried Cajun turkeys. And if you’re a pie baker, White Rock Farmers Market has a contest for you.

St. Michael’s family day

St. Michael’s Farmers Market hosts a family day 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 16, with lots of activities for the kiddos plus its usual good shopping ― all geared toward the coming Thanksgiving holiday. That means fall produce, eggs, pickles, salsas, tamales (how about tamale dressing?), cookies, pies and more.

Stocks & Bondy turkey stock

Joanne Bondy brings out her holiday goodies Nov. 15, including organic turkey stock (make your gravy ahead), turkey gravy (or let Joanne make it), traditional stuffing, and Everett & Elaine Texas pecan pies as well as pumpkin pies. All items will be available at Stocks & Bondy in The Market building at the Dallas Farmers Market, and the stock and gravy only will be at Royal Blue Grocery stores, Cox Farms Markets and Jimmy’s Food Store.

Cajun Turkey Co. birds

The Cajun Turkey Co. will deep-fry the big bird for you (eliminating a whole lot of mess at your house) and is taking orders now for Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. Owner Billy Howell says his best-seller is the lightly seasoned Cajun-fried turkey. But the store carries a full line of meats, sides and other good stuff, including crawfish queso (for making crawfish mac-and-cheese) and crawfish cornbread.

You can reserve your bird online or take your chances with walk-in. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 24, the Sunday before Thanksgiving. 1400 Moccassin Trail, Suite 19, Lewisville. 972-318-0307. cajunturkeyco.com.

Get your pie on

White Rock Farmers Market hosts its 11th annual Battle of the Pies from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 23. It’s open to amateur bakers of all ages, and categories include Fruit, Nut, Chocolate, Cream/Custard, Savory, Youth and Best Overall. Pie crusts and fillings must be homemade. Entry fee is $10 a pie. Even if you don’t enter, you can still taste to your heart’s delight ($5) and maybe even gain inspiration for your own holiday baking. This event is always a rollicking good time. Plus, there’s still great shopping at one of Dallas’ premier producer markets. Contest details are at goodlocalmarket.org.
