Shaved ice shop Snowbaby is closing permanently in Lakewood Dallas

It was known for its healthful desserts with vegan and gluten-free options.

A creamy shaved ice shop named Snowbaby is closing at the end of the day in Dallas on Nov. 21, 2021.

The lease has ended for the Lakewood shop, says owner Chrissy Kuo.

“It was not an easy decision for me to make because this company is such a personal passion of mine and my first business venture,” she wrote on Instagram. “I wanted to influence how we look at the quality of food we offer to our youth and ourselves, as well as tap into the adventurous side of eating that I love so much.”

Snowbaby sells cups of shaved ice, fluffed up by adding milk. The website describes it as a mix of a snow cone and ice cream, “layered like the airy texture of freshly fallen snow.” Kuo developed the recipes, taking inspiration from Taiwanese shaved ice, or xue hua bing.

She promised no “junky components,” meaning that the toppings are whole foods made without artificial flavorings or preservatives. Ice cream flavors include vanilla, dark chocolate, strawberry, organic coconut (which is vegan), White Rock coffee (made with the East Dallas shop’s cold brew) and more. Cups of shaved ice can come topped with sliced almonds, gluten-free granola, pineapples, rainbow sprinkles, and gluten- and soy-free vanilla cake bites from Unrefined Bakery.

Unlike many small sweets shops, Snowbaby has nutritional information for all of its shaved ice flavors. Each serving is 150 to 275 calories.

The shop also sells bubble waffles, which the site describes as “the funnel cake’s healthier cousin.” The waffles are dressed with powdered sugar and topped with the option of chocolate chips, cinnamon sugar or fruit.

Snowbaby opened in spring 2018. Kuo opened a pop-up from August 2021 to September 2021 at Stonebriar Centre in Frisco. She also has a food truck that can cater birthday parties and other events.

Kuo operated the business with a small team‚ “no partners or investors,” she wrote on Instagram.

“To say it’s been challenging to get this far would be an understatement,” she wrote.

“I just need to take a break for a little bit,” she said in an interview. She’s not sure if the shop and the food truck will live on.

Snowbaby is at 6404 Gaston Ave., Dallas. It will remain open until the end of the day on Nov. 21, 2021.
