The last few Texas baseball postseasons have shown that Dallas-Fort Worth’s northwest region may boast some of the state’s toughest competition.
So do these rankings.
Flower Mound Marcus (14-4-1), which lost to Keller in last year’s 6A Region I semifinals, overtook the top spot in The Dallas Morning News’ area 6A rankings. Behind it are District 6-6A foes Flower Mound (No. 3), Hebron (No. 6) and Plano (No. 10). Nearby District 4-6A (No. 7 Southlake Carroll and No. 8 Keller) has two teams ranked, too.
District 6-6A is among the state’s best leagues, and Marcus is already 3-1 with a 21-to-8 run differential in its first four against district opponents. After a district opener loss to No. 3 Flower Mound, it’s won three consecutive games with back-to-back shutouts against Northwest Eaton and Coppell — two teams which spent the majority of last season either area- or state-ranked.
Of note: Southlake Carroll (10-7-2), the reigning 6A state champion, has struggled out of the gate. But a six-game win streak in which it outscored its opponents 59-10 may be a sign that Larry Vucan’s team has began to round into form as district play begins.
