Don English is retiring from coaching after winning more than 600 games and coaching a Cy Young winner and several other major league players.
English said Thursday that he has stepped down as the baseball coach at TCA-Addison to become the school's men's athletic director. He was a head coach for 37 years and had a career record of 663-442-12.
"I'll miss it, but now I can coach coaches, who in turn, will coach our most important clients -- young men in our care," English said in an email.
Brian Gaffney has been named the baseball coach at TCA-Addison, coming over from Plano John Paul II. He takes over a TCA team that was 17-14 in 2019 and lost in the TAPPS Division I state quarterfinals to eventual champion Argyle Liberty Christian.
English started his head coaching at West Mesquite in 1983 and also coached at Highland Park, Plano East, Coppell and Plano West before spending the last seven years at TCA-Addison. At Coppell, he coached star pitcher Corey Kluber, the American League Cy Young Award winner in 2014 and 2017 for the Cleveland Indians.
English also coached major leaguers Chris Young (Highland Park), Billy McKinney (Plano West), Wes Bankston (Plano East) and Matt Young (Plano East). Chris Young, who pitched for the Rangers and four other teams during a 13-year major league career, was named MLB's vice president of on-field operations, initiatives and strategy last year.
English won more than 100 games at four schools -- Highland Park (144), Plano East (111), Coppell (211) and TCA-Addison (132). He had three 30-win seasons at Coppell, in 2005, 2008 and 2011.
