Frisco Reedy’s Cole Hebel
What he did: Hebel had clutch pitching and hitting performances in helping Reedy go 2-0 this week. In a 10-7, 18-inning marathon against Frisco Lone Star on Thursday he pitched 71/3 innings in relief without giving up an earned run to keep the game tied 5-5 into the 11th inning. He had 11 strikeouts while allowing two hits and three walks. Hebel was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in Reedy’s 8-0 win over Frisco Independence on Tuesday.
Who he is: A senior left-handed pitcher/outfielder. Hebel signed with Creighton in November, choosing the Blue Jays over South Dakota State.
The stats: Hebel has a 4-2 record with a 2.02 ERA. In 342/3 innings with 42 strikeouts and 12 walks. He is batting .293 with five doubles, two triples and 17 RBIs. He has helped Reedy compile a 16-6-1 record, 8-2 in District 9-5A.
He said it: “I had about 10 minutes to come in from left field to get ready to pitch. It was Tiger Balm [a pain-relieving ointment] all over my pitching arm and Advil that got me through it. The best part of the game was getting a strikeout with runners on second and third and a 3-2 count. To beat Lone Star was great, but when it ended at around 12:40 a.m. I was dead tired. I’m still sore right now. This game will always stick with me, no matter how long I play.”
Coach said it: “Cole is comfortable as a starter and reliever. He enjoys pressure situations. He seems to enjoy coming into them. I feel good about his future because he’s got four pitches: fastball, curveball, changeup and slider.” — Chris Cox
Did you know? Hebel’s father, Jon, is a former standout pitcher for Auburn. … Hebel plans on majoring in business and marketing in college. … His favorite course at Reedy is keyboarding, which is taught by assistant baseball coach Caleb Zoda. ... Hebel’s favorite meal is venison backstrap with broccoli and a baked potato topped with cheese and butter. … His favorite baseball player is Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven, who is the father of Reedy catcher Dylan Blyleven. “I like watching videos of him because of how he threw a curveball. I like it that no matter what the situation was he was calm. He was never a hothead,” Hebel said.
