Baseball area rankings (4/6): Coppell, Flower Mound rise with undefeated weeks

District 6-6A now has three teams in the top six of the Dallas-area 6A rankings.

Rockwall-Heath, the reigning 6A state champions, took over as Dallas-area No. 1 last week. It may not be letting go anytime soon.

Heath (18-3) has won nine games in a row since a mid-March loss to Prosper Rock Hill, and flashed its clutch gene on Tuesday in a 6-5 win over No. 7 Prosper (14-7). Heath surrendered five runs to Prosper in the first two innings, but rallied to score two in the third, three in the fifth and one in the top of the eighth to capture the extra-inning win.

Mississippi State signee Jett Williams (2-for-4, two runs scored) paced the offense while junior Collin Adams pitched six scoreless innings in relief with seven strikeouts.

District 6-6A makes its push: With Keller (14-5) ranked second in the 6A rankings and Southlake Carroll (18-6) ranked third, District 4-6A makes a solid case to be the Dallas area’s (and, the state’s) most difficult district.

But, District 6-6A may have something to say about that.

Coppell (13-5) and Flower Mound (15-6) each rose in the 6A rankings with undefeated weeks. Coppell, now ranked fourth, beat fifth-ranked Flower Mound Marcus (15-5-2) and Hebron (8-11-1) to jump four spots and leapfrog Marcus. Flower Mound beat Plano East (5-14-1) and Lewisville (8-11) to move from eighth to sixth.

Aided by a combined 1-4 week from Prosper and Denton Guyer (who each dropped two spots), District 6-6A now has the third, fourth and fifth-ranked Dallas-area teams in 6A.

Lovejoy makes a statement: Since it opened the season 2-3, second-ranked Lovejoy (13-7) has gone 11-4 and is on a six-game winning streak.

It’s most recent win — a 6-0 decision over No. 6 Prosper Rock Hill (13-10) — came with some dramatics. Senior Jack Livingstone, a Temple College signee, pitched a seven-inning no-hitter and struck out 10 batters. Baylor signee Kolby Branch, Lovejoy’s leadoff hitter, had a pair of home runs and went 3-for-4 at the plate in the win.
