Flower Mound 6, Pearland 4

ROUND ROCK — Danny Wallace, with the wry smile of a been-there-done-that baseball coach, took the opportunity for a victory lap on Dell Diamond’s infield Saturday.

“Little old Flower Mound,” Wallace said. “We were the unranked team.”

Flower Mound — a perennial contender with some state championship pedigree — was the lone 6A team at the UIL baseball state tournament not ranked on the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s statewide poll. The three other championship hopefuls were ranked first, second and third.

“We laughed at that all week,” Wallace said. “We lost those last three games of the [regular] season and we disappeared from the polls. We thought it was kind of funny.”

It was funny then. Probably downright comical now.

ROUND ROCK — A little bit to the right. A little bit to the left.

“And we’re the state champions,” Argyle coach Ricky Griffin said, replaying the final at-bat of Saturday’s state title game loss in his head.

Baseball, depending on which side of the final score a team is on, can favor the lucky and punish the unlucky. A team can do just about everything right — like Argyle did in the seventh inning of its 3-2 loss to Magnolia West in the UIL 5A baseball state championship game on Saturday at Dell Diamond — and still leave with a silver medal.

Flower Mound 6, Cypress Woods 3

ROUND ROCK — Zack James was not supposed to be the hero. He was not supposed to be the one mobbed by teammates on the Dell Diamond infield. He was not supposed to largely shut down one of the country’s best high school baseball teams.

Heck, he wasn’t even supposed to play.

And yet, in Flower Mound’s 6-3 win over Cypress Woods in the UIL 6A baseball state semifinals Friday, he was the hero, he was mobbed by teammates and he did, indeed, pitch quite the game given the circumstances.

“That’s Zack,” Wallace said. “He just doesn’t give up runs, he just competes his rear end off.”

ROUND ROCK — The first pitch lit the scoreboard radar gun up at 95 miles per hour.

And it only got harder from there.

Magnolia West senior James Ellwanger — a Dallas Baptist pledge and potential early-round MLB Draft pick — ended Frisco Reedy’s chance at history in dominant fashion.

The 6-5 righthander pitched a 17-strikeout one-hitter in a 3-0 win over Reedy (28-16) in the UIL 5A state semifinals on Thursday at Dell Diamond. He struck out nine of the first 10 Reedy hitters he faced, and struck out seven straight from the first inning through the third. Reedy’s Caden Jones singled with two outs in the seventh inning to snap the no-hitter, which would have been the fifth in 5A state tournament history.

Argyle Grady Emerson, (1), is picked up by Logan Gregory, (59), after scoring against Boerne Champion in the fifth inning of the 2023 UIL State 5A Baseball semifinals held Thursday, June, 8, 2023, in Round Rock, Texas. Argyle 5, Boerne Champion 2

ROUND ROCK — Good things come to those who wait. Or at least to those who know to be patient at the plate.

How’s this for patience: Argyle, against Boerne Champion in the UIL 5A baseball state semifinals on Thursday at Dell Diamond, reached base 10 times and scored two runs — on seven walks and three hit batters — before it even recorded its first hit in a 5-2 win.

Argyle, a three-time state champion (2019, 2018, 2014), will play Magnolia West in the 5A state championship game on Saturday at Dell Diamond. It’ll be Argyle’s second-consecutive state championship game and first at the 5A classification. It lost to Sinton in last year’s 4A state title game before rising in class prior to this school year.
