This week’s Texas Association of Basketball Coaches rankings are out, which can be viewed in full here. All overall records are via the TABC.
Here are some takeaways we noticed from this week’s rankings:
Both rankings
There are only eight area schools with teams in both the girls and the boys rankings.
6A
Duncanville — No. 4 girls, No. 1 boys
South Grand Prairie — No. 6 girls, No. 6 boys
Allen — No. 11 girls, No. 22 boys
5A
Highland Park — No. 23 girls, No. 16 boys
Mansfield Legacy — No. 8 girls, No. 22 boys
4A
Argyle — No. 20 girls, No. 3 boys
TAPPS (top 10)
John Paul II — No. 8 girls, No. 1 boys
Colleyville Covenant — No. 9 girls, No. 8 boys
Girls rankings
UIL
- DeSoto has dethroned Duncanville as the top area 6A team. The two played on Dec. 22 with DeSoto winning 62-55. DeSoto is the No. 3 overall Class 6A team, trailing only Cypress Creek and Converse Judson. DeSoto is also the No. 2 ranked girls team in the nation, according to MaxPreps. Duncanville is at No. 3 in the same national rankings. DeSoto and Duncanville are scheduled to play one another again on Jan. 23.
- DeSoto wasn’t he only area team to rise in this week’s rankings. Thirteen other schools in 6A, 5A and 4A moved up this week. They are:
- 6A: Allen, Hebron and Plano
- 5A: Mansfield Legacy, McKinney North, Wylie East, Red Oak, Lake Dallas, Grapevine and Midlothian
- 4A: Sunnyvale, Pinkston and Midlothian Heritage
- Two area schools joined their respective top 25 rankings: Cedar Hill in 6A and Highland Park in 5A.

Private schools
- Dallas Lutheran is the lone area school to rise in this week’s rankings — going from No. 8 to No. 6 overall in the 3A rankings. They went 4-0 in that span.
- Fort Worth Southwest Christian and Dallas Christian retain the top two spots in Class 5A. FW Southwest does so without having played a game, while Dallas Christian went 3-3 in that span.
- The No. 1 4A team, Lubbock Trinity Christian, has a 0-0 record on the year. The second-ranked team, Tyler Bishop Gorman, is 13-5 overall this season.

Boys rankings
UIL
- Five area schools moved into their respective top 25 rankings since they were last published on Dec. 21. Allen (No. 22 overall) and Flower Mound Marcus (No. 23 overall) made appearances in the 6A rankings. Mansfield Legacy (No. 22 overall), Mansfield Summit (No. 23 overall) and Frisco (No. 24 overall) appeared in the 5A rankings.
- Several area schools also moved up in the rankings. In the 6A region: Waxahachie (up to No. 3), Richardson (up to No. 5), South Grand Prairie (up to No. 6), Lewisville (up to No. 16) and Mansfield (up to No. 21).
- Two 5A schools rose in the rankings: Frisco Memorial (up to No. 9) and Kimball (up to No. 13).
- The Dallas-area still has the top-ranked teams in 6A (Duncanville), 5A (Lancaster), 4A (Faith Family), 3A (Madison) and 1A (Slidell).

Private schools
- Only one area school that was in the previous top 10 rankings moved up this week: TCA-Addison. They moved up from the No. 7 spot in the 6A/SPC rankings to the No. 5 spot going 5-0 in the span between rankings (and are 13-1 overall).
- The area teams in front of TCA-Addison in the rankings also have just one loss on the season: No. 1 John Paul II is 15-1 and No. 4 St. Mark’s is 3-1.
- Three area schools made the jump into their respective top 10 rankings this week: Grapevine Faith, Red Oak Ovilla and Garland Christian.
