Boys basketball area rankings (2/9): Frisco Memorial rises, Highland Park joins 5A top 10

Both Frisco Memorial and Highland Park are on double-digit win streaks.

Frisco Memorial (27-3, 16-0 District 9-5A) keeps on winning as the regular season comes to a close.

Memorial has won 20 games in a row, and broke the Frisco ISD win streak record on Monday night against Frisco. It beat Frisco Independence on Tuesday night, and owns the third-longest win streak in the state behind Plano and Austin Westlake.

Junior Drew Steffe, a four-star Texas Tech pledge, scored 21 points in Tuesday’s win. Senior Mason Wujek added 18, and classmate Avery Jackson scored 17. Memorial rose one spot in this week’s area 5A/others rankings to No. 3.

“They believe, they trust, they love each other,” Memorial coach Quinton Gibson said. “They bought in to what we’re trying to do, and that’s a little bit of maturity right there as well.”

Welcome to the top 10, Highland Park: Winners of 10 straight and the first-place team in District 13-5A, Highland Park (20-4, 10-1 District 13-5A) joined the area 5A/others rankings for the first time this season at No. 10.

The Scots have a slight edge over Forney (24-8, 10-2 District 13-5A) in the district standings, and beat the second-place team 75-47 in late January.

Highland Park has two regular season games remaining with a district crown in sight: Greenville (Friday) and Royse City (2/15).

All is chalk in 6A — for now: There wasn’t any movement in this week’s area 6A rankings, though several big games on Friday could impact next week’s standings.

No. 3 Denton Guyer (29-3) and No. 6 McKinney (27-5) will play a rematch of their January district game in which Guyer held on for a 83-81 win.

Top-ranked Richardson (28-1) and No. 4 Lake Highlands (29-3) will meet again on Friday as well. Their first showdown in January proved to be one of the area’s most entertaining regular season games as Lake Highlands five-star sophomore Tre Johnson put on a show with 37 points, and nearly led his team to an upset win over nationally-ranked Richardson.
