After a pair of high-profile rematches in the last week, both McKinney and John Paul II took a jump in their respective rankings.
McKinney (29-4), ranked third in 6A, avenged a two-point January loss to sixth-ranked Denton Guyer with a 71-59 win on Friday night. Four-star junior guard Ja’Kobe Walter scored 28 in the win. McKinney jumped from sixth to third with the win as Guyer, which lost to Prosper on Tuesday, fell to sixth.
And for John Paul II, Tuesday’s game against Plano Prestonwood offered an opportunity to make up for a 57-56 loss from last month. It did with a 57-49 win as junior Gabe Warren scored a game-high 20 points. John Paul II, which clinched a share of the TAPPS District 6A-2 title, will be the top seed in the TAPPS Div. I Region II tournament.
Keller joins 6A top 10: With a 62-46 win over Southlake Carroll on Tuesday night, Keller (25-8, 12-0 District 4-6A) capped off its district-championship season in undefeated fashion. It also joined the area 6A rankings for the first time this season.
Junior guard Parker Hannah scored a team-high 16 points in the win for Keller, while senior guard Wyatt Bell added 12 points.
Kimball clinches top playoff spot in District 12-5A after coin clip: After beating Lancaster on Friday night to keep itself alive in the District 12-5A title hunt, Kimball (22-8) beat Sunset on Tuesday to tie Lancaster (23-10) atop the district standings.
The district flipped a coin on Wednesday morning to determine whether Kimball or Lancaster would be the top playoff seed in District 12-5A, and Kimball won. Lancaster, which beat Kimball in January, will be the district’s second seed.
