Black is coming off an impressive freshman year with Arkansas in which he averaged 12.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He was also a key contributor to the Razorbacks NCAA Tournament run that included an upset over No. 1 seed Kansas before falling to the eventual champions UConn in the Sweet 16. Despite the loss, he led his team with 20 points, five rebounds and one assist.
The guard began his high school career at Coppell before transferring to Duncanville for his senior year. However, he was ruled ineligible by the UIL in October as the association deemed he transferred for athletic purposes. Though he was in and out of the lineup in the year, he was able to play in Duncanville’s playoff run. The five-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American was the MVP of the championship game, scoring a team-high 19 points to help Duncanville top McKinney 69-49 to win its third straight 6A state title.
Nevertheless, Duncanville was forced to forfeit the title after the UIL deemed they used an ineligible player whose family sought a court’s decision to allow him to keep playing during much of last season. Coach David Peavy was given a one-year suspension. The program was issued a three-year probation period and a public reprimand, while McKinney was awarded the title.
