Duncanville returns to top of Class 6A, bests South Grand Prairie for 12th state title

With just over two minutes left in Saturday’s Class 6A state championship game, chants of “D-Ville” rang out from the Duncanville cheering section. The chants got louder as Duncanville took out its starters a minute later to a standout ovation.

Those on hand at the Alamodome knew that the City of Champions had secured another state title. This one might be the sweetest yet.

In the final game of her high school career, senior forward Mariah Clayton overcame first-half foul trouble and scored 19 points to lead Duncanville to a 59-41 win over South Grand Prairie. As the final buzzer sounded, Duncanville players rushed onto the court and did a dogpile near midcourt. Then Duncanville players rushed to the stands to celebrate with their fans.

Jacy Abii, Frisco Liberty surge past Timberview for second straight UIL 5A state title

Ross Reedy isn’t one for hyperbole, especially when it comes to Jacy Abii. The Frisco Liberty coach was being completely serious when he said recently that his five-star sophomore has the capability to be the best female basketball player in the world someday.

It may be a while before Abii reaches the level of WNBA superstars Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson and Sabrina Ionescu and NCAA phenoms Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, but the state’s No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2026 certainly looked like the best high school player in America on Saturday.

After flirting with a triple-double in Thursday’s state semifinal, the 6-2 Abii dominated in the second half and had 30 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as Liberty rallied from 12 down for a 60-51 win over state No. 1 Mansfield Timberview in the Class 5A state championship game. With its 18th consecutive win, Liberty (34-7) won its second straight state title and its third championship in five years.

Lincoln forces overtime, ultimately falls short against Waco La Vega in 4A state semifinal

AN ANTONIO — It took an epic shot by Lincoln’s T’Anna Saddler to force overtime in Friday’s Class 4A state semifinal.

But then Waco La Vega showed why it is the defending state champion, clamping down on defense to win a game for the ages.

La Vega held Lincoln to a combined six points in the two overtime periods and won 65-60 at the Alamodome. Wichita State signee Kiyleyah Parr shot just 2-for-17 from the field for La Vega but was 11-for-18 from the free throw line — including three clutch makes in the second OT, for La Vega.
