Five-star sophomore Jacy Abii is leaving state champ Frisco Liberty to attend Legion Prep

Abii is the No. 1 recruit in Texas and is rated the ninth-best player in America in the Class of 2026.

Legion Prep Academy announced Sunday night that five-star sophomore Jacy Abii is transferring to the Dallas-based prep school from back-to-back Class 5A state champion Frisco Liberty.

The 6-2 Abii, the No. 1 recruit in Texas and the ninth-ranked player in the nation in the Class of 2026, confirmed in a direct message on X (formerly Twitter) that she is making the move. Frisco Liberty coach Ross Reedy did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

“From an off-the-court standpoint I’d like to go ahead and learn how to manage my time well with a college-style schedule academically,” Abii said in her direct message. “Both my parents played college ball and saw how Legion Prep’s schedule could be very beneficial at teaching me how to manage my time well, and having my parents here helping figure that out is a huge plus before I go off to college.

“What made the decision so difficult for me was Liberty has been my family the last two years, and the academics are one of the best in the state. Also athletically we’ve accomplished so much and the chance to continue was a strong pull to stay.”

Abii’s father, Haskell, said in a direct message: “Basketball was not the motivator, though there may be some benefits there as well. Legion being close to home and their academic scheduling was the primary reason. We also are looking forward to Jacy participating in a number of internships to help her figure out what she wants to do after the ball stops bouncing.”

Abii posted a message on X, saying “I want to thank ALL of my teachers at Liberty for pouring into me the last two years along with the AMAZING Coach Ross Reedy, his staff and my teammates. I’ve been SO blessed to be supported and mentored by so many fantastic people. I am FOREVER grateful!”

Legion Prep is starting to attract elite recruits from around the Dallas area. Oklahoma State signee Kennedy Evans transferred from Denton Braswell and played her senior year at the prep school this year, and Legion Prep just announced that four-star sophomore Kamora Pruitt from DeSoto is transferring there. Pruitt is rated the 20th-best player in the nation in the Class of 2026.

Abii was The Dallas Morning News All-Area Girls Basketball Player of the Year this season after averaging 20.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.1 blocks. Abii had 30 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in Liberty’s 60-51 win over nationally ranked Mansfield Timberview in the Class 5A state championship game.

Abii had the most points in a state championship game in the UIL’s second-largest classification since Plainview’s Alesha Robertson scored 34 in a 68-40 win over Lincoln in 2002. It was the first 30-point double-double in a state championship game in the UIL’s top two classifications since Cy-Fair’s Chiney Ogwumike had 31 points and 18 rebounds in a 65-41 win over Fort Bend Hightower in the 5A title game in 2010.

Abii is among 38 athletes who will participate in the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team minicamp that will take place in Portland, Oregon, from Thursday to Saturday in conjunction with the NCAA Tournament regional round. She also just took part in an elite camp run by two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart that featured the top 30 sophomore and junior high school players in the country.

Liberty became the first Frisco ISD basketball team — boys or girls — to win back-to-back state titles. It will now have to replace its top two scorers from this season, as Stephen F. Austin signee Keyera Roseby graduates after averaging 11.4 points. Abii and Roseby were both all-state selections.

Abii received her first college offer as an eighth-grader and now has more than 40 offers. That list includes defending national champion LSU, Baylor and Texas, which have all reached the Sweet 16 in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Legion Prep Academy opened in 2015. It won the TCAL championship this season, and it played several UIL schools, beating McKinney North, Cedar Hill, North Crowley and Glen Rose and losing to 6A state semifinalist Humble Summer Creek and 4A state champion Waco La Vega.
