ARLINGTON — Arlington Martin scored 45 unanswered points to beat Arlington 52-21 on Friday night at Globe Life Park in both teams' District 9-6A opener.
The Warriors found themselves trailing by 14 after Arlington (2-2, 0-1) scored 21 points in the first quarter to take a 21-7 lead. Arlington Martin had turnovers off special teams plays, and the Colts capitalized off of those miscues.
However, Martin quarterback Zach Mundell wasn’t going to let the early deficit keep the Warriors from playing their style of football.
“There’s a saying at Martin and it’s ‘Adversity is good,’ so you’ve just got to roll with the shots and go and not let up,” Mundell said. “At the end of the day a loss would have hurt harder, so you’ve got to get the win.”
Mundell accounts for 138 yards of offense and three touchdowns, while his defense clamped down on Arlington’s rushing attack and forced four turnovers.
Martin coach Bob Wager said his team is normally surehanded when receiving the ball on special teams, but it struggled to handle squib kicks the Colts were sending the Warriors (3-1, 1-0).
“I think in part we did that to ourselves when you muff a punt and muff a kickoff,” Wager said. “We’ve got some young guys one the field — no excuses, but this is our first time ever to be in the building. I think we cleaned up some things fundamentally and played like our hair was on fire for the rest of the game.”
Both teams used several trick plays to score in the game. Wager compared Friday’s game to going to “Schlitterbahn,” saying the game was exciting.
The Colts scored their third touchdown of the game off after kicker Cooper Hicks faked a field goal and ran it in for the score from 24 yards out.
Wager said that play was the wakeup call the Warriors needed to get back into the game.
“They had a great play on the fake field goal which is right up our alley so kudos to the Colts,” Wager said.
