5 Dallas-area football storylines to know for Week 6, including a ranked showdown in Frisco

Plus, Lewisville’s running back is approaching a career milestone.

Here are five storylines to watch as we head into Week 6 of the high school football season.

Can Garland’s QB stay hot?

Garland (5-0, 2-0 District 9-6A) is off to its best start since 2008 behind quarterback Cergio Perez. The South Dakota pledge is averaging about 330 yards and five touchdowns per game. Perez is on track to break 2,000 passing yards by Week 8 (Garland has a bye in Week 7) or even this week if he passes for at least 347 yards.

Garland is coming off of a 56-29 win against Garland Naaman Forest where Perez went 37 of 49 for 428 yards and five touchdowns to improve to 2-0 in district. Wide receiver Jordan Hudson had 12 catches for 183 yards and three touchdowns.

This week, Garland — which moved into 6A’s top 10 for the first time this season — will host Garland Lakeview Centennial at 7 p.m. Thursday at Garland’s Williams Stadium.

Big tests in District 5-6A

District 5-6A might be one of the toughest districts right now with three undefeated teams and positive point differentials across the board.

This week, two of those undefeated teams — McKinney Boyd and Denton Guyer — will face tests in Allen and Prosper, respectively.

The last two times Denton Guyer and Prosper faced each other, they’ve been nail-biters. Last season, Guyer rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Prosper 24-23 in a district game. Then, the two met up in a fourth-round playoff game that Guyer won 30-24 in double overtime.

McKinney Boyd (5-0) is hosting Allen (3-1) this week in hopes of keeping its winning streak alive. Allen had a bye last week, so McKinney Boyd will be its first district opponent. The two last met in 2020, with Allen winning 42-9.

Frisco showdown

Crosstown rivals Frisco and Frisco Liberty meet Friday this week in a matchup that could help determine the eventual District 7-5A Division II champion.

No. 9 Liberty and No. 7 Frisco are two of three undefeated teams in 7-5AII. Lovejoy (4-0, 2-0) is the third. Frisco last defeated Liberty 39-19. The pair are 1-1 in their last two matchups.

Liberty will play without Evan Stewart, the nation’s top-ranked receiver, for the third game this season. Liberty is currently led by quarterback Keldric Luster in both passing and rushing. Luster has accounted for a combined 21 touchdowns, 1,380 passing yards and 526 rushing yards.

Lewisville running back approaches career milestone

Damien Martinez, one of the top rushers in 6A, is 116 yards away from 3,500 career rushing yards. The Oregon State pledge finished his junior season with 2,012 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns.

This season, Martinez has rushed for 753 yards and 12 touchdowns on 64 carries. Martinez is No. 51 overall in The News’ Area Top 100 and is the No. 4 RB on the list for the Class of 2022.

In Lewisville’s 64-28 win against Plano West last week, Martinez had 13 carries for 199 yards Lewisville will play Plano East at 7 p.m. Friday at Murphy’s Kimbrough Stadium.

Matchup in Arlington

Arlington Martin will host South Grand Prairie this week at Choctaw Stadium. The last time the two met, Arlington Martin won in Scorigami fashion 11-8.

Fun fact: Only one NFL team has won by a score of 11-8: In October 1994, the Cleveland Browns defeated the Houston Oilers 11-8.

The defenses of Martin and South Grand Prairie will be put to the test in this district matchup. South Grand Prairie (4-1, 1-0 District 8-6A) and Martin (3-2, 1-0) are both at the top of their district.

Arlington Martin won its district opener against Arlington 65-17 and South Grand Prairie won its district opener against Arlington Bowie 46-28.
