Garland QB approaches milestone

South Dakota pledge Cergio Perez is 251 yards short of surpassing 3,000 passing yards this season. If Perez can remain consistent against Rowlett this week, he’ll be the first quarterback in the area to reach the milestone this season.

Perez, the leading 6A passer in the area with 2,749 yards passing and 42 touchdowns, is averaging about 343 yards and 5.25 touchdown passes per game this season. He recently threw for 414 yards and eight touchdowns in Garland’s 61-24 win over North Garland this past week.

The senior quarterback has helped Garland to an 8-0 record, 5-0 in District 9-6A.

District 8-6A title on the line

Grand Prairie has been to the playoffs once over the last decade. It’s been almost four years since then and the Gophers now have a chance to clinch both playoff spot and the district title in the same season when it hosts Arlington Martin this week.

Grand Prairie (6-3, 5-0) and Martin (6-2, 4-0) are the only undefeated teams remaining in their district. While Martin still has an extra game left to play, this week’s matchup between the pair will mark Grand Prairie’s regular season finale.

The Gophers are coming off of a close 42-40 win against Arlington Bowie this past week, a team Martin defeated 68-14 before entering its bye week.

Championship rematch

Parish Episcopal, the No. 1 TAPPS DI school in the area, hosts Fort Worth Nolan Friday in a rematch of the 2020 TAPPS DI state championship game that Parish won 42-28.

During the regular season last year, Nolan beat Parish 31-14. So far this season, Parish is 7-1 overall and 5-0 in district. Nolan is 3-5, 3-2 after having to forfeit three wins.
