Determined to make history, Wakeland is standing tall as last Frisco ISD team in the playoffs

Marty Secord’s phone blew up this weekend, figuratively. The Frisco Wakeland football coach fielded numerous calls after his team knocked off Highland Park 29-28 on Friday in a Class 5A Division I area playoff, including many from fellow coaches.

How many fellow Frisco ISD coaches gave Secord a ring?

“Every other Frisco coach reached out to me,” Secord said. “Matt Webb at Centennial sent congratulations on a huge win. Independence coach (Kyle) Story congratulated me too. Every coach sent me a text or called me.”

The other Frisco ISD coaches gave the Wakeland Wolverines a virtual pat on the back for being the district’s pleasant surprise of the year. In a season where Lone Star, Frisco High and Liberty got the most praise in the regular season it’s Wakeland that is the last district team standing in the postseason. It’s a reward for a program that learned from regular-season setbacks to equal its best-ever playoff run.

The challenge now for the 2021 Wolverines is to set the standard for future Wakeland teams to reach.

Wakeland (9-2) will take College Station (12-0) in a 5A-I Region II semifinal Friday at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana. It’s the second time the Wolverines have advanced this far in the postseason, also making the region-semifinal round in 2016.

Wakeland stands after Lone Star, Frisco High and Liberty fell in the area round.

Lone Star (9-3) was ranked No. 4 in The Dallas Morning News’ area rankings, but fell to College Station 55-21 in a 5A-I playoff last Friday. No. 8-ranked Frisco High (10-2) started the season 7-0, but lost to South Oak Cliff 35-24 in a 5A-II contest last Thursday. No. 7-ranked Liberty (10-2) had an offense that averaged 43.8 points per game, but was routed by Aledo 57-14 in a 5A-II game last Friday.

Meanwhile in Allen, No. 12-ranked Wakeland got a six-yard jump pass by tailback Jared White for a touchdown followed by a two-point conversion run by White with 27 seconds remaining to topple the top-ranked Highland Park squad. Both White and safety Collin Peek said they have heard numerous praises from well wishers since then as well, and while pleased about the success they are not surprised. White has rushed for 1,845 yards and 26 touchdowns this season.

“People have underestimated us,” Peek said. “We knew what we had and what we could do coming into this year.”

Euless Trinity’s dynamic QB, RB duo will be put to the test in region semifinal vs. Allen

EULESS — Euless Trinity made a dramatic change to its offense to start this season, moving four-star running back Ollie Gordon to quarterback.

That was despite the fact that Gordon was coming off a 2,000-yard rushing season and had produced one of the greatest games in Dallas-area history in the playoffs against Allen.

The move didn’t last long. Halfway through the season, Gordon was back at his natural position of running back.

That’s because Trinity found that it had a quarterback who could add a different dimension to the offense that had been missing with its superstar at quarterback.

Enter Cade Barthelemess, a senior who gives three-time state champion Trinity a rare pure passer. He has had double-digit pass attempts in four of the last five games and hasn’t had a single rushing attempt all season, which is almost unheard of at Trinity.

Last season, Trinity quarterback Valentino Foni had 92 rushing attempts and ran for 644 yards and nine touchdowns for a team that reached a regional final.

“We don’t call many designed [quarterback] runs with Cade in there,” Trinity coach Chris Jensen said.
