Dropped out: 20. Lake Highlands

On the rise: Waxahachie, ranked 19th in the preseason area poll, climbed into the top 10 with another impressive win, this time 51-21 over state power Cedar Hill in the teams’ District 11-6A opener. Keller moved into the No. 20 position after it beat preseason No. 20 Northwest Eaton 35-28 on the road to improve to 4-0.

Keep an eye on: District 6-6A play begins this week after its teams had bye weeks, with a number of schools jockeying for the top position. Lewisville, Flower Mound Marcus and Coppell are ranked, and Plano East is 3-0 and eyeing a return to the postseason. Could a win over Plano to start district play put PESH back into the top 20 and firmly in the playoff picture?

Dropped out: 18. West Mesquite

On the rise: A number of ranked teams made statement wins over ranked opponents last week, including South Oak Cliff (31-28 over TAPPS No. 1 Parish Episcopal), Lancaster (74-7 over McKinney North), Forney (43-14 over West Mesquite) and Melissa (50-22 over Crandall). Lake Dallas, 4-6 a year ago, improved to 4-0 with a 57-27 win over 6A Grand Prairie and entered the poll at No. 20.

Keep an eye on: Ennis (1-3) dropped out of the 5A area poll last week but bounced back with a resounding 45-7 win over District 5-5AII opponent Corsicana. It could re-enter the minds of pollsters with a win over 3-1 Everman. Midlothian Heritage and Mansfield Summit also will vie for the District 5-5AII crown.

Also receiving votes: Nevada Community 2

Dropped out: None.

On the rise: Anna knocked off Celina 28-25 in one of North Texas’ best games to claim the unanimous No. 1 spot. Anna, which missed the playoffs last year, owns wins over two area top-three teams (Aubrey is tied for third this week) and should crack the top five in the state 4AI poll this week.

Keep an eye on: Pinkston continued its hot start, improving to 4-0, but back-to-back games against Wilmer-Hutchins and Carter to start District 7-4AI play should offer a better measuring stick for the upstart Vikings, who were 0-10 last year.

On the rise: FW Southwest Christian crushed John Paul II 63-0 to improve to 3-1 and re-enter the poll, while DIII Dallas Covenant enters the Top 10 for the first time this season. Covenant has outscored opponents 192-30 in its 4-0 start.

Keep an eye on: We now know that Parish Episcopal ranks somewhere between Aledo and South Oak Cliff ... which basically means it’s at least a state-championship-caliber UIL Class 5A team. Can anyone in TAPPS keep Parish Episcopal from winning its fourth straight TAPPS Division I state championship? Before we find that out, another reigning state champion awaits in a game vs. China Spring.
