Week 6 Dallas-area high school football rankings: Frisco ISD creates 5A logjam

District play will ensure more ranked teams square off over the next few weeks.

The fifth week of the 2022 high school football season is in the books, which means it’s time for the latest SportsDayHS rankings, as voted on by staff writers and editors.

The top team in their 6A and 5A ballots received 20 points, the second received 19 and so on. The top teams in Class 4A/3A and private schools received 10 points. The totals were tallied, and we ranked each team by its composite score.

Voters: Lia Assimakopoulos, Tommy Magelssen, Shawn McFarland, Greg Riddle, Myah Taylor and Demetrio Teniente.

Also receiving votes: McKinney Boyd 2.

Dropped out: None

On the rise: Rockwall, the preseason No. 6 team in the area, made its return to the top 10 with its 56-21 statement win over rival Rockwall-Heath on Friday. Mansfield is the only other team that moved up two spots (from No. 16 to 14), but its undefeated record will be put to the test soon with three games against ranked foes over the final five games of the season.

Keep an eye on: The middle of the season is here, and district races are starting to take shape. Though there wasn’t much movement in the rankings this week, there are four area 6A districts that have at least three teams ranked: 4-6A, 5-6A, 6-6A and 11-6A. It could be make-or-break time for some teams that are off to slow starts to district play.

Dropped out: 20. Lake Dallas.

On the rise: The logjam of Frisco ISD teams continues with Frisco Wakeland’s upset win over previously No. 9 Frisco Lone Star. Frisco Heritage, at 4-1, should be on the cusp of the top 20 entering its bye week.

Keep an eye on: Midlothian takes on Killeen this week in an early clash of District 4-5AI favorites. With only two Dallas-area teams in the district, it may be tougher to gauge just how good Midlothian is until it finishes out league play. Six of the teams in the district have a winning percentage of at least .750.

Dropped out: 9. Pinkston

On the rise: Blue Ridge enters the rankings for the first time after a 4-1 start, with a bye week on hand this week before facing Lone Oak. Kaufman is a unanimous No. 3 after splitting votes with Aubrey last week. Kaufman beat Sunnyvale 21-7.

Keep an eye on: How will Pinkston respond to its first loss of the season, a 20-14 setback in which it faced a goal-to-go situation to tie the score and couldn’t punch it in during the final seconds? It plays No. 6 Carter with a chance to bounce back immediately against a ranked team.

Dropped out: 9. Fort Worth Nolan

On the rise: Fort Worth Christian and Dallas Covenant both moved up a spot, while Fort Worth Lake Country is a newcomer to the poll this week.

Keep an eye on: District play begins in earnest for many area private schools this week, but before then, Fort Worth Christian faces Dallas Christian in one of the final nondistrict games of the season.
