Former major league All-Star Vernon Wells is named football coach at Colleyville Covenant

Wells played football and baseball at Arlington Bowie and was a first-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Colleyville Covenant Christian announced Tuesday night that it has hired former Major League Baseball All-Star Vernon Wells as its head football coach.

Wells played football and baseball at Arlington Bowie, and he signed with Texas to play both sports before being drafted in the first round by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1997. He has coached multiple sports during 11 years at Colleyville Covenant, and he was the associate varsity football coach for six years, during which time CCA won two state titles. He replaces Phil Towe, who is now the school’s athletic director.

“This is an out-of-the-park home run hire for our football program,” Towe said in a press release. “Vernon is one of the smartest coaches I know, as he is on another level in terms of coaching, seeing the game and competitiveness.”

Wells was a three-time All-Star with the Blue Jays, and he also won three Gold Glove awards as an outfielder in his 15-year major league career that began in 1999 and ended in 2013. He had a career .270 batting average, hit 270 home runs and had three seasons with more than 30 home runs and 100 RBIs.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to continue the success Coach Towe and his staff have achieved on the field,” Wells said in the press release. “Obviously, my goal is to win another state championship, but my purpose is to mentor and guide our student-athletes, and hold them to a standard of excellence that honors our Lord.”

Wells’ son Christian announced last week that he has committed to SMU as a preferred walk on. The defensive back played his senior season of football at Fort Worth Southwest Christian but returned to Covenant for the spring semester after spending his first three years of high school at CCA.
