DeSoto coach Claude Mathis named to 2024 College Football Hall of Fame ballot

A four-time All-American running back at Texas State, Mathis holds numerous program records.

DeSoto football coach Claude Mathis, a former running back at Texas State, was named to the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame ballot on Monday.

Mathis, a state title-winning coach at DeSoto, was a four-time All-American at Texas State (then Southwest Texas State) from 1994-97. He holds 14 program records, including career rushing yards (4,694), rushing touchdowns (45), all-purpose yards (7,264) and total points scored (294). He was named the Southland Football League Player of the Year in 1996, finished third in the Walter Payton Player of the Year voting and was inducted into Texas State’s hall of honor in 2011.

Mathis, who previously coached at Anderson, Somerville, and Austin LBJ, coached DeSoto from 2008-15 before he left to coach at SMU and Marshall. Mathis returned to DeSoto in 2016. He won his first state championship in 2022 after DeSoto beat Austin Vandegrift 42-17 in the 6A Div. II state title game in December.


Other members on the 2024 ballot with Texas ties include SMU defensive back Russell Carter, TCU running back Kenneth Davis, Rice wide receiver Jarett Dillard, Ennis and Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, Texas defensive back Michael Huff, Texas A&M cornerback Kevin Smith, Texas Tech coach Jim Carlen, Austin College and Texas Tech coach Pete Cawthorn Sr., UTSA coach Larry Coker, UT-Arlington offensive tackle Bruce Collie.
