Southlake Carroll vs. Euless Trinity

Where: 7 p.m. Friday at Pennington Field

This rivalry is considered one of the best in the Dallas area in large part because of the legendary second-round playoff game they played in 2006, a matchup of defending state champions that Carroll won 22-21 en route to its third consecutive state title. But this year’s matchup should be spicy, too, with three of the top running backs in the state. USC pledge Riley Wormley and Baylor pledge Davis Penn of Southlake Carroll have combined to run for 537 yards and nine touchdowns for 3-0 Carroll, while UTEP pledge Josh Bell has rushed for 267 yards and eight touchdowns for 3-0 Trinity. Trinity ranks third among area 6A teams in rushing, averaging 292.3 yards per game.

Waxahachie at Duncanville

Where: 7 p.m. Friday at Reginald Samples Field at Panther Stadium

Duncanville has seen 77% of its offense come from the passing game, as five-star Alabama pledge Keelon Russell has thrown for 612 yards and eight touchdowns for a 2-0 team that is ranked No. 4 in the nation by MaxPreps. But it’s Waxahachie quarterback Jerry Meyer III, a move-in from Nevada, who leads area 6A players in passing yards going into this District 11-6A opener. Meyer has thrown for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 346 yards per game for 2-1 Waxahachie. The problem for Waxahachie is that Duncanville, whose secondary is led by SMU commits Javion Holiday and Tyren Polley Jr., has allowed just 73.5 passing yards per game in wins over South Oak Cliff (has played in three straight state championship games) and St. Frances (Md.), a team that was ranked No. 22 in the nation at the time.

North Crowley vs. Rockwall

Where:7 p.m. Thursday at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium

After Rockwall star quarterback Landyn Locke suffered a season-ending torn ACL, Brent Rickert stepped in last week and threw for 312 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-27 win over Lewisville. Triston Gooch and Camron Marsh have combined for 36 catches for 452 yards and five touchdowns in three games, and they’ll need another big game to keep up with a North Crowley team that is ranked No. 11 in the nation. Led by wide receiver Quentin Gibson (503 yards, 10 touchdowns) and quarterback Chris Jimerson Jr. (750 yards, 12 touchdown passes), North Crowley averages 45 points and 512 yards of total offense. Going back to last year’s state semifinal season, North Crowley has scored more than 40 points in 15 of its last 18 games, and it had more than 60 in six of those games.

Riddle’s pick: North Crowley 49, Rockwall 31

Waco Midway vs. Mansfield

Where: 7 p.m. Thursday at Vernon Newsom Stadium

Both teams are 3-0, and Mansfield is seeking its third straight 4-0 start. Mansfield has beaten Midway each of the last four seasons, and Mansfield ran for 413 yards in last year’s 42-31 win. Mansfield four-star junior Zion Robinson is rated the 10th-best wide receiver in the nation, and quarterback Braxton Van Cleave already has nine touchdown passes for an offense that averages 48 points. Midway is allowing just nine points per game.

Riddle’s pick: Mansfield 28, Waco Midway 21

Frisco Lone Star vs. Frisco Centennial

Where: 7 p.m. Thursday at David Kuykendall Stadium

Frisco Centennial is 3-0, but this will be its toughest test of the season as it faces a Lone Star team that is also 3-0 and is ranked No. 5 in the state in 5A Division I. Centennial is allowing an average of 12.3 points, but Lone Star four-star running back/wide receiver Davian Groce is averaging 12 points per game by himself with four receiving touchdowns, one rushing score and one touchdown on a kickoff return. Karece Hoyt, in his first year as Lone Star’s full-time quarterback, has thrown for 650 yards and eight touchdowns and leads the team in rushing with 248 yards and four scores. This matchup went down to the wire last year, with Lone Star winning 35-28 in overtime after overcoming a 21-point third-quarter deficit.

Riddle’s pick: Frisco Lone Star 42, Frisco Centennial 14

Lovejoy at Anna

Where: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Coyote Stadium

Jacob Janecek is in his first year as Lovejoy’s starting quarterback and has thrown 10 touchdown passes and completed 65% of his passes in three games. It will be an interesting matchup as Lovejoy four-star wide receiver Daylan McCutcheon, committed to Florida State, goes against an Anna secondary featuring SMU pledge Zay Gentry. This will be a matchup of state championship coaches, as Seth Parr led Anna to the 4A Division I state title last year and new Lovejoy coach Todd Dodge won seven state championships during his time at Southlake Carroll and Austin Westlake.

Riddle’s pick: Anna 31, Lovejoy 28

Cherry Creek (Colo.) at Highland Park

Where: 7 p.m. Friday at Highlander Stadium

Cherry Creek has three of the top 10 recruits in Colorado with Utah pledge Soren Shinofield on the offensive line, Washington State pledge Aiden Knapke in the secondary and Charlotte commit Jeremiah Hoffman at wide receiver. But not many visitors walk into Highlander Stadium and come away with a win. Highland Park’s last home loss was 30-19 to Frisco Lone Star in 2019, and that was just the second home loss for coach Randy Allen since he took over as Highland Park’s coach in 1999.

Riddle’s pick: Highland Park 35, Cherry Creek (Colo.) 21

Skyline at Cedar Hill

Where: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Longhorn Stadium

The winner of this District 11-6A opener will take a big step toward earning a playoff berth. The loser could be in trouble with games remaining against defending state champions Duncanville and DeSoto, along with state-ranked Waxahachie and area-ranked Lancaster. Four-star Texas pledge Elijah Barnes, rated the 11th-best linebacker in the nation in the Class of 2025, has 43 tackles, seven tackles for loss and four sacks in three games for Skyline (2-1).

Riddle’s pick: Cedar Hill 21, Skyline 20

Frisco Wakeland vs. Frisco Reedy

Where: 7 p.m. Friday at the Ford Center at The Star

The winner of this game will be 2-0 in District 5-5A Division I and would have a great chance to finish among the top two in the district. Reedy has played the first three games without star running back Triston Airy, who ran for 1,495 yards and 19 touchdowns last season, but Jake Ferner has thrown for 624 yards and eight touchdowns and Jarrett Walker has run for 232 yards and three scores. Wakeland led area 5A teams in passing last year, averaging 307.8 yards per game, but this year Aidan Poole ranks fourth in rushing yards (417) and is tied for second in rushing touchdowns (seven).

Riddle’s pick: Frisco Reedy 28, Frisco Wakeland 20

Plano vs. Allen

Where: 7 p.m. Friday at Eagle Stadium

The three Plano ISD schools have lost 47 consecutive games to Allen in football since Plano beat the five-time state champion 45-7 in 2005. Allen and Plano last played in 2019, a 56-20 Allen win. Allen has outscored the opposition 147-17 during a 3-0 start this season as Brady Bricker has thrown for 596 yards and accounted for eight touchdowns (seven passing).

Riddle’s pick: Allen 42, Plano 14

Plano East vs. Plano West

Where: 7 p.m. Friday at Clark Stadium

Plano East has started 3-0 for the second time in three years as Travis Agee leads area 6A players with 581 rushing yards. The teams have split their last six meetings, with Plano East winning 56-13 last year, as it had 346 passing yards. Jackson Hays, who threw a touchdown pass in that game, is now the Plano East starter and has accounted for 11 touchdowns (eight passing).

Riddle’s pick: Plano East 38, Plano West 13

Mansfield Timberview vs. Colleyville Heritage

Where: 7 p.m. Friday at Mustang-Panther Stadium

Northwestern pledge Braden Blueitt ranks second among area 5A players in receiving yards (369) after he had 74 receptions for 1,136 yards and 20 touchdowns last year as Colleyville Heritage reached a regional final for the fourth time in eight years. Bodey Weaver is the new starting quarterback for Heritage and ranks fifth in the 5A area in passing yards (702). He will be facing a Timberview defense that held 5A Division I state No. 1-ranked Denton Ryan to 208 total yards two weeks ago in a 28-0 loss and limited 5A Division II state No. 5-ranked Argyle to 218 total yards in a 24-14 loss last week.

Riddle’s pick: Colleyville Heritage 24, Mansfield Timberview 14
