FRISCO — Triston Airy made his season debut on Friday, and the senior running back for Frisco Reedy admitted he was rusty. He was still very good, but he didn’t need to be because his team’s defense was fantastic.

Airy accounted for 112 total yards of offense and two touchdowns while tackle Luca Akirtava led a Reedy defense that held Frisco Wakeland to 41 total yards, pitching a shutout in a 35-0 Reedy win in a District 5-5A-I game at the Ford Center at The Star. Reedy defense had 11 tackles for loss with Akirtava making four, three of them sacks.

Airy — who rushed for 1,495 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2023 — made his 2024 premiere after missing three games because of a hamstring pull. The Prairie View A&M commit started slow but got cooking with 11:29 left in the second quarter by bursting through a big hole in the right side of the line for a 55-yard touchdown run to extend Reedy’s lead to 14-0.

Airy added a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:06 left in the second to cap a 62-yard drive that featured a 46-yard pass from Jake Ferner to Jackson Ford. Airy had 56 yards on six carries in the first half.

“It was rusty at the beginning, but it got better on the touchdown run. The hole the line gave me was big, and when I scored I felt back to normal. I was about 80% tonight,” Airy said. “The best part of the offense was everybody got the ball and everybody was contributing.”

Reedy — ranked No. 12 in The Dallas Morning News’ Class 5A area poll — improves to 3-1, 2-0 in 5-5A-I and 5-2 all-time against Wakeland, which fell to 2-2, 1-1. Wakeland suffered its first shutout since a 14-0 decision to Frisco Lone Star in 2018. It’s the largest victory margin in the series history with five of its previous games decided by 7 points or less.

Reedy’s defense was nearly dominant in the first half, holding Wakeland to 22 total yards. Akirtava — who is receiving recruiting attention from multiple FBS programs — had three tackles for loss with two sacks in the first half. Preston Healy and Harrison Latimer had two tackles for loss for the game apiece for Reedy while Josiah Fuksa and Marcus Finney had an interception each.

Akirtava had high praise for Reedy defensive coordinator Brad Lagrone.

“This is what we game plan for every week. Wakeland is a big rival, so we had to show up tonight,” Akirtava said. “Coach Lagrone is the best defensive coordinator in Frisco. He told us to come out and show who we are. We’ve the best defense in Frisco and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Reedy opened the scoring with 32 seconds left in the first quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Ferner to Mason Easley, who had his helmet ripped off as he crossed the goal line. Ferner passed for 219 yards and two touchdowns while Easley had seven receptions for 79 yards and two touchdowns.

Wakeland’s defense kept the Wolverines in the game until a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ferner to Easley with 1:32 left in the third quarter. Wakeland had six sacks, two apiece from Matthew Broach, Austin Wilson and Cedric Thornton. Lincoln Cole added an interception for Wakeland.
