Week 5 Dallas-area high school football rankings: Two top Class 5A teams swap spots

Here are the SportsDayHS rankings for Dallas-area teams going into Week 5 of the 2024 Texas high school football season.

With Week 4 of the 2024 Texas high school football season in the books, it’s time for the latest SportsDayHS rankings, as voted on by staff writers and editors.

The top teams in their 6A and 5A ballots received 20 points, the second received 19 and so on. The top teams in Class 4A received five points, and private schools received 10 points. The totals were tallied, and we ranked each team by its composite score.

Note: The point totals are higher than in previous weeks this season because of the addition of another voter: new high school sports reporter Ronald Harrod.

Dropped out: McKinney (19)

Notable: All quiet on the 6A front, for the most part. Byron Nelson reaped the benefit of not being in action last week, moving up two spots, while Rockwall and Waxahachie dropped slightly after losses to Nos. 1 and 2, North Crowley and Duncanville. Following a win over Waco Midway, Mansfield enters the rankings in a tie for No. 19 with Keller Timber Creek.

Dropped out: No one

Notable: Week 4 didn’t have too big an impact on the 5A rankings. Highland Park’s 51-39 loss to a Colorado school resulted in it switching places with South Oak Cliff, which is coming off a shutout 62-0 victory over Spruce. Lovejoy earned a move from No. 14 to 11 after an epic 66-62 win over Anna, which dropped two spots.

Dropped out: Sunnyvale (T-5)

Notable: Sunnyvale, we hardly knew ye. A week after entering the rankings in a tie for fifth, Sunnyvale’s 28-14 loss to Van leaves Aubrey to stand alone at No. 5. All five ranked teams won in Week 4, with Frisco Panther Creek, Celina and Lake Dallas remaining undefeated, but that’s about to change when Panther Creek and Celina face off in a Week 5 district matchup.

Also receiving votes: St. Mark’s

Dropped out: Fort Worth Nolan (8), Trinity Christian-Addison (10-T)

Notable: We put some respect on Episcopal School of Dallas, unranked before this week, after it almost completed an upset of No. 1 Fort Worth All Saints before losing 42-39 at the Ford Center at The Star. A 28-21 loss to Fort Worth Southwest Christian dropped Fort Worth Nolan out of the rankings, and Dallas Christian dropped three spots after a 49-9 pummeling by Prestonwood.
